Kentucky Derby 2010

The Kentucky Derby is gearing up and there are all kinds of excitement surrounding this year’s race. The race is always held on the first Saturday in May not only to commemorate spring but to kick off the more road to the Triple Crown. Make sure that you do not look away, as the race is only two minutes long. I remember one year when I went to the kitchen to get a drink and by the time I got back, the race was over and boy was I sad. This particular race is steeped in tradition and they have been running it for 136 years. It is one of the most prestigious horse racing events in the entire world.

 The racetrack is 1 1/4 miles with each horse and jockey looking to earn that trophy and the blanket of red roses that the governor of Kentucky presents. It’s hard to say who the front-runner is really are, however there are several horses that are looking good. One horse has already been withdrawn, Winslow Homer had a stress fracture. Some of the contenders for the Churchill Downs race are Dryfly, Buddy’s Saint and Conveyance. Each of these have one some great races in the past and there are other potential contenders like Sidney’s Candy.
