Jay-Z Sues David Ortiz Due To 40/40 Name

Published on April 16th, 2010

Everyone knows how much the Red Sox and the Yankees just do not get along, and that has just gone a bit more complicated as hip hop rapper Jay-Z is suing David Ortiz.  The lawsuit stems from the fact that the Red Sox designated hitter is using the name of Jay-Z’s nightclub chain for his own nightclub in the Dominican Republic.  Even though the name for the club in the Dominican Republic is displayed differently, “Forty-Forty”, it is still a copyright infringement as he did not receive any permission.

Jay-Z has said that it is not an accident as Ortiz has been a patron at the 40/40 club on several occasions.  He and his partner also go on to state that it has created quite a bit of confusion and damages.  The ultimate Yankee fan named his club the 40/40 club after the plastic that a baseball player can achieve when they hit 40 home runs and have 40 stolen bases in one season.  There’ve actually only been four players throughout baseball history that have done this, which also includes Alex Rodriguez.

Jay-Z , or his representatives are talking about whether or not they will be seeking compensation, a name change or just an apology from David Ortiz.  It is also not known if Jay-Z would be as upset if one of his precious Yankees had used the name.  Just one more incident in a long line of the Yankees hating the Red Sox.
